DEUTSCH: The hospice volunteer?LEWIS: I took a ten-week training course in how to become a hospice volunteer. Actually, a lot of friendships with some of the homeless people grew out of that. Mark J. Thatâs what makes the Hill the Hill to me. In the wintertime thereâs only about 1,500, I guess. LEWIS: Yeah, she is. Geoffrey Lewis, Actor: The Devil's Rejects. We tried a couple of times and worked with the PSAs [Police Service Areas] to get more involved and try to coordinate. We have a film club, a book club, opera club. LEWIS: Oh yes. We still do all these things. His wife Betsy is up there. People who were, willing to volunteer in various capacities almost immediately. Weâve called it the Rogers Fund. Played hard, worked hard. Itâs becoming an artistâs place of renown. DEUTSCH: In a way, of course, that puts stress on the person being cared for.LEWIS: Absolutely. Included in that group were Nicky and Steve [Cymrot] and Mimi Wolf and Ralph Dwan, Mary Procter, Lynn Kneedler and a few others. Actually, we approach the younger generations now, [who] use it as itâs a kind of an insurance policy so that if something should happen to youâif you fall down, get sick or your partner gets sick, or otherwise you canât take care of your partner or somethingâthen the Village is here to help you. We decided we needed to hire an executive director. And we had Larry Molumby, of course, who was our first treasurer, who was instrumental in helping us. You can get burned out very, very easily and you donât know it. But we did not. Then we moved to 621 G Street SE, which was the old Moynihan house. I enjoyed the soup kitchen. I retired having done my time, which was 30 years in the feds, and reached the speed limit, which was 55. Enrique Gomez was a president. I just do it up there.DEUTSCH: How has that been, being a hospice volunteer? While, I guess, I was elected president or something, we sat around and quickly decided what we had to do. Cushing, Maine, is where Andrew Wyeth lives in the summer, or he did live. Many people as they get older kind of tend to stray in their thoughts and canât remember if the doctor told them to take two aspirin once a day or one aspirin twice a day. After the fire at the Eastern Market, itâs my understanding that by three oâclock in the morning, again Nicky and others had raised over three or four thousand dollars to help the merchants. LEWIS: Public administration, a masterâs degree. I wouldnât even say a sale. In fact, we were president of it for a while, Terry and I. Of course, you have to let the person decide. I think one of the areas that has been a challenge, but we may try to approach it differently, is trying to work with churches here on the Hill. I really donât know. We worked hard and had a lot of fun. I guess I started in 2013 with that.DEUTSCH: Do you do that here as well?LEWIS: No, I donât do hospice here. LEWIS: It was. It was just an easy thing to do. DEUTSCH: So youâre getting your feet wet with a lot of different stuff in the community. Because they asked, they are provided the service. LEWIS: Itâs in Cushing, Maine. LEWIS: Got a job after a while. Gerald McRaney, Actor: Focus. They bought the lot across the street that had a small house to try to get renters, young couples who would help them with the house if they went away or as they got older to do chores around the house. DEUTSCH: How many founding donors where there? Again, we worked hard, played hard. I helped coordinate that. Like Beacon Hill Village, we also have a program for people who canât afford the membership fees. Thereâs Moms on the Hill. No, I donât do anything volunteer up there exceptâI just pick up trash, but thatâs all. If the caregiver does not want the help, I think itâs too bad. Nineteen feet, nineteen-foot day sailor. Mary Procter and others had ideas of how to proceed, what to do, which have benefited us greatly. I worked with the State Programs Branch where the RCRA law said that, states had to have programs that were equivalent to the federal program. You canât force them, but you can make [it] known that you would like to help. Judy and Mike Canning are organizing it. I mean just paid services. DEUTSCH: She was very preoccupied during this time with the Hill Center [at the Old Naval Hospital]. For a token amount they join a program. So we were the happy page 3. recipients of this lovely child. Itâs a manual. Usually there were about 50 awards given each year, either individual or teams who had worked on a project. I never really thought of it that way. It used to be called greenhouses, but thatâs a misnomer because people think of vegetables and other kinds of things. Thatâs the kind of thing that Capitol Hill responds to. Mary Procterâgovernment. Sig Cohen was there for a while, and Hal Gordon. Sheâs now 43 I guess, will be 43, living in Aberdeen, Maryland, with two kids. LEWIS: The tenth anniversary and we still continue to try to get more memberships. At one time we hadâI think we still doâwe decided with borders, for instance, that weâd have a policy of leaky borders so that somebody outside the Capitol Hill areaâwhich was defined roughly as North Capitol Street to 19th Street, to K Street [SE] on the south, to H Street [NE] on the northâ[could join]. Jumping back to when it first started, I guess the first articles, the first phrases that people would mention was that I went back to the well and went to the usual suspects who were community-oriented: Mike Canning, Larry Molumby, Nicky. From time to time, weâd entertain somebody who was just outside of those boundaries for one reason or another. The second president was Mary Procter. I said, âWell, who will work on it? There were various levels. I think George Ingram was chair at that time. I think thatâs too bad. It was great because I went to see Kathy and we talked. The group that I started was extremely dedicated. Can I get copies of items from the Library? Many artists there. We spend from May pretty much to middle of November up there. LEWIS: We also have social activities too. Then a panel of agency people would look at the nominations and decide whether they were worthy and would select several. We still do. So our job was to help find differences, and where the states were not as good, help them rewrite their regulations and programs so that they would be up to snuff. Itâs interesting that Cushing is a rather conservative town. They shovel walks. Doesnât quite challenge her enough, I think. LEWIS: I think there were 15. DEUTSCH: Do you think the lack of diversity is simply a reflection of the way the community has changed? Then we moved to the Hill in 1970 onto Third Street NE, right behind the Supreme Court in an English basement apartment. We got together and just started hammering it out. Theyâre the most helpful people if something happens to you, but theyâre very close when you want to try to offer help to them. It also allows people to not have to go [to Ohio where they donât know anybody] if their sons and daughters or somebody have gone to Ohio and worry about their elders. It just sort of took off. The grandchildren love it. She left in 2011 or 2012. Itâs been fun. LEWIS: Yes, I think she was. I was working in training, working with the program divisionsâwater, radiationâto set up training programs. Harriet volunteered to be secretary. I thought it important to try to let the residential people know what CHAMPS as a business community was doing and vice versa. She likes it. We had internal discussions about who and what we were going to be. There were ten regions, ten federal regions. It takes, I think, a dedication. Fundraising, of course, is a ... LEWIS: No major challenges. So we designed a logo and had stationary printed inexpensively. In terms of raising money we found that relatively easy because of the generosity of people on the Hill. Itâs going to go up though. & Thompson, Ruth. Itâs knowing that youâre a comfort to somebody and that youâre allowing, perhaps that caretaker of that person, to get out and do whatever one needs to do, or just to go out and have lunch or go to a movie. Let the CHAMPS office know what kinds of things the residents were interested inâperhaps what kinds of shops and things. We really think this is a viable thing to do here.â We found just tremendous support from everybody. LEWIS: No, at that time I lived on the edge of Georgetown on Mill Road, which is just above Q Street. He’s been a keynote speaker at events such as The Web 2.0 Summit, Gamification Summit, TechCrunch 50, and EyeForTravel. DEUTSCH: Tell me about your kids. But the community is so rural and dispersed and the natives are so involved with other things that it just didnât work out too well. Who will have people into their homes?â Nobody would raise their hand. I think she was. Many states had programs that page 4. were more restrictive than the feds. We reach out, we try, but somehow itâs not coming together as quickly as we want. Itâs financial based. The co-op was terrific. We decided, I think that, we could not be everything to everybody. She was a really interesting. They came up with a great idea at the beginning, before we were even a 501(c)(3), [to] incorporate in the District of Columbia. Her husband at the time was deputy chair of the Fed [Federal Reserve Board] along with Ben Bernanke. They almost always were.
